Don Moen wrote a song, ‘Be it unto me, according to Your Word…’
I know a scripture that goes like this:
For with God nothing will be impossible.” Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. (Luke 1:37-38, I guess Don Moen was using the King James Version, but I am used to the New King James Version)
My girlfriend and I were at a public park doing devotion together. She asked me to share from the Bible. Even before I opened the Bible, a great faith arose in me. I knew for certainty that God was going to speak to us. When I read about Mary, God gave us a powerful revelation: a key to a miracle.
Let’s read about what happened prior to Luke 1:37-38.
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. (Luke 1:26-36)
It was an impossible thing! Never had been heard before! A virgin giving birth? How can this be? Bear in mind that there was no such thing as `artificial insemination’ then. No, it wasn't artificial insemination. It was `divine intervention'. The angel Gabriel said to Mary, ‘For with God nothing will be impossible.’
What is this key to God’s miracle? Mary answered Gabriel, ‘behold the maidservant of the Lord.’ She was saying, ‘let God do in me, and with me, whatever God wants, I am all God’s.’ Mary also said, ’let it be to me according to your word.’ Gabriel carried the message of God. Mary decided to allow, submit and obey - whatever God wants. This then, is a key to a miracle. Mary learned her lesson well. Fast forward thirty one years (roughly). And you read the below:
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!” (John 2:1-10)
There was a wedding in Cana. Mary was there. Jesus was invited also. They ran out of wine. There could be a few possible reasons. One that came to my mind was that the bridegroom couldn’t afford to buy more. If this was the case, the bridegroom must have been pretty poor because he couldn’t afford to buy the inferior wine sufficiently, let alone the good wine.
Mary seemed to have an answer to a situation which needed a miracle. She said, `whatever Jesus tells you to do, do it.’ Can I ask you a question? When did Mary, first learned this secret to a miracle?
Remember Luke 1:37-38? `Let is be to me according to your word.'
`God, let me obey whatever You tell me, whenever You tell me! I am expecting a miracle!’
Not surprising, my girlfriend and I, sang Don Moen’s song that afternoon at the public park. God spoke to us. The miracle was, against all financial odds, we got a wedding - a beautiful wedding not unlike a wedding, a long time ago, in Cana.
We remember that, before the wedding date, in a prayer together, we did invite Jesus to our wedding. You want a miracle? Invite Jesus to your situation. Be prepared to do what He tells you to do, from now on, whenever He tells you.
`Let it be to me according to Your word.'
