Sarai To Sarah
Genesis 17:15-16
Then God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.” (Genesis 17:15-16)
Sarai was a take-charge take-control person. When she couldn’t bear children, she arranged for her husband Abram (Abraham) to sleep with her Egyptian maidservant (Genesis 16:1-4).
God changed Sarai’s name to Sarah. Through this change, God was delivering a message. Sarai, the name basically means `dominator’.
Dominator likes to take hold of the situation, and do something for the desired result. Dominator, an active capable person, harbors unbelief towards God. Dominator believes in works, rather than trusting God totally.
Sarah laughed at the promise of God. Her name was changed earlier, but she was still in progress in that changing process (Genesis 18:13).
Jacob inherited his grandmother Sarai’s trait. In resemblance to Sarai-to-Sarah change, God changed Jacob’s name [meaning `heel-catcher’] to Israel [meaning `he will rule as God’] (Genesis 32:28).
You see, Jacob was always striving for a position. He grabbed Esau’s heel at birth so he could get ahead or get out. As a youngster, he shrewdly negotiated with Esau to gain the birthright of the first born. He, later on, slaved himself to Laban in order to marry Rachel. He was cheated repeatedly before he finally got Rachel. Jacob ruled his own life. He decided his destiny. He was the captain of his soul. So God decided to change that.
`Sarah’ means `noble woman, princess, queen’. In contrast to a manageress, a queen moves with grace. A manageress gets things done; a queen merely has to utter her wishes. A manageress has her hands full; a queen sits in a quiet rest on her royal seat. A manageress has to contend for her role; a queen inherited it.
A queen executes her power, trusting gracefully in her position with the King.
We are the Sarah of today. We belong to the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings. We pray to get things done, more than the reliance on our own efforts. We move gracefully in the grace of God because we know our position with God. We are the people of grace. We inherited it through what Jesus had done. We didn’t gain it nor obtain it.
God’s promise, Isaac, came to Sarah, not Sarai. The promise of God is fulfilled by grace. When we move in the grace of God, we can, thus, conceive, bare and birth forth the promise of God into reality.
